The words you will hear

Every sport has its own vocabulary and nobody explains it to you twice. These are the terms that come up in a first session.

Gi

The reinforced jacket, trousers and belt worn in traditional classes. Rentals are available at the academy so you do not need to buy one to try the sport.

Roll

Live sparring against a resisting partner, without striking, usually in five minute rounds. Beginners roll lightly or watch until they are ready.

Tap

Two firm taps on your partner or the mat, which ends the exchange immediately. It is the safety valve of the sport and using it early is a sign of good training, not weakness.

Guard

Controlling an opponent from underneath using your legs. It is the position that makes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu different from most grappling styles, and it takes months to feel natural.

Open mat

Unstructured training time with no set lesson, where you can drill, roll or ask questions.

Drilling

Repeating a technique with a cooperative partner until the movement stops requiring thought. Most of your early improvement comes from here.

The honest version

Will I get smashed

Not by anyone following the academy's rules. Beginners are paired with people who can control the exchange, and a training partner who cannot control intensity is the problem rather than a rite of passage. Say if a round is too hard and it stops.

Am I too unfit or too old

Neither is a gate. You will be tired and sore for the first fortnight, which is adaptation rather than a verdict on your fitness. Many students arrive with no athletic background at all.

What do I wear

T-shirt and shorts with no zips, pockets or buttons, plus flip flops for off the mat. Trim your nails. For Gi classes, rent a uniform until you decide to buy.

Do I need experience

No, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Tell the coach you have never trained and the class is adjusted around that rather than assuming you will keep up.

On injuries

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a contact sport and injuries can happen, most often to fingers, toes and knees. Beginners train at controlled intensity for exactly this reason, submissions are released the moment a partner taps, and the coaching team stops rounds that get careless. That is risk managed honestly rather than a promise it is completely safe.
